The first stage of the UPSC Civil Services Examination is the Preliminary Examination. This phase comprises two papers, each featuring objective-type (multiple choice) questions, with a combined maximum score of 400 marks.
It’s important to note that the Preliminary Examination serves solely as a qualifying and screening stage. The marks secured here are not counted toward the final merit list.
From those who clear the Prelims, about 12 to 13 times the total number of vacancies are shortlisted to appear for the Main Examination, provided they also meet the prescribed eligibility conditions for the next stage.
Your It’s essential to understand the negative marking policy of the Preliminary Examination:
-For every incorrect answer, one-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question are deducted as a penalty.
-However, unanswered questions incur no penalty — leaving a question blank does not affect your score.
The Prelims consist of two mandatory papers, each worth 200 marks. Both are objective-type (multiple choice) and have a duration of two hours each.
-General Studies Paper-II (CSAT) is a qualifying paper, and candidates must score at least 33% marks in this paper to be considered for shortlisting.
Additionally, the question papers are made available in both Hindi and English, allowing candidates to choose their preferred language.
